Cayman Islands completes destination sustainability assessment

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council Destinations Program conducted a comprehensive assessment of the sustainability of the Cayman Islands as part of its Destinations Program, following the territory’s status as the GSTC’s latest destination member. The procurement and organisation of the assessment were spearheaded by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism and the Cayman Islands Department of Environment.

The assessment of the Cayman Islands was conducted by the Kathleen Pessolano on behalf of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council from 29 May–8 June 2015. During the 10-day assessment period, more than 30 stakeholders responsible for destination management areas under the GSTC Standard for Destinations were consulted, alongside a review of relevant policy documents to assess compliance with the standard.

Based on the comprehensive assessment, preliminary results were presented to cross-sector stakeholders during a workshop on 8 June 2015. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council subsequently produced an assessment report outlining final findings and recommendations to improve alignment with international best practice as set out in the GSTC Standard and Indicators.

On 12 November 2015, an additional onsite presentation of the assessment results was delivered to destination stakeholders, accompanied by a discussion on next steps for implementing the recommendations outlined in the report.
